Interior Security Tips

  • Keeps windows and doors locked at night and while away from home.

  • All entry doors should have a deadbolt lock.

  • Put lights on timers. Use random settings so they alternate as long as one is always on when dark.

  • While away, leave a radio or TV on with the volume at a level that can just be heard through a window or exterior door.

  • For residential properties, keep curtains or blinds closed while away.

  • For commercial properties, keep curtains or blinds open while your business is closed. Make sure there is always a light or two on so when a patrol car drives by they can see any movement or activity on the premises.

  • If you are paying for a home security system, use it! Make sure it is armed while you are away or sleeping at night.

  • Place motion sensors in areas where an intruder would have to gain access to enter your home or building.

  • If you want extra security, get a large dog.

  • If you choose to own a weapon, make sure you register and learn how to properly use it. Take a class!  Use gun locks!  Keep it locked in a gun cabinet if you have children around!  Make sure you know whom and what you are aiming to shoot at!

  • Make sure your answering machine doesn't tip off a potential burglar.  Make sure your answering machine message states, "No one is available to come to the phone right now, please leave a message and we will return your call shortly."  That is much better than... "This is James and Jenni, we are in the Bahamas for two weeks. See you when we get back on September 2nd. Leave a message after the beep."  Way too much info! Don't you think?

  • Make sure your children know how to answer the phone properly when they are home alone. Tell them NOT to say that "My mom and dad aren't home right now."  Tell them a better response would be... "They can't come to the phone right now, they will call you back shortly."

Exterior Security Tips

One thing a security system cannot control is who you let into your home or who you select to watch it while you are away.  If you need babysitter for the kids so you can go out or a pet sitter to walk the dog while you are away for the weekend or a house sitter to watch your home and tend to your yard while you are on vacation, make sure you get an experienced sitter. We recommend the following sitter sites to assist you in finding a qualified sitter for your home, pets and children:

In today's society, security systems are an important part of home and business ownership. We all need to protect our families, homes, businesses and assets. In addition to a modern, up to date video surveillance and motion detection system, there are many other cost efficient things you can do to protect your home and your business.

Most burglars and criminal do reconnaissance before they break into a home or business. If they see a few of these tips in place, they may be discouraged seeing that it would be too challenging or risky to attempt a break in and they may focus their attention elsewhere. Here are some security tips we recommend you do around your home and business where applicable:
